Closet Update: November 2018

Walking into November after a low-spend month, I knew that this month could only unfold in two ways: 1) I … More

Don’t let the cacti fool you—It’s actually been raining here in LA! 🌧 And this LA girl finally owns her first pair of rain boots ever! 🙌🏻 There’s a new blog post up over at THEPLEBLIFE.COM reviewing the @everlane rain boot. Link in bio 👆🏻// Do you own them too? What are your thoughts on them so far? // #pleblife
This is easily my favorite corner of our little 400 sq. ft apartment. It’s one of the first things I see when I wake up each morning. My heart sings when my little desk is clutter free and when there’s a fresh vase of blooms sittin’ pretty on top (my fave is a combo of sunflowers and eucalyptus 🌻🌿). We’ve been a little slow at hanging art and things up on the walls, but we are getting there slowly and purposefully. . . It’s funny how your priorities change over time as you pursue minimalism: I used to want a big place with a huge walk-in closet with shelves and shelves of shoes and purses. Now, I’m perfectly content sharing a normal sized closet (the double doors you see here) with Brandon in our cozy studio apartment. I’ve been here for almost 4 years, and we’ve now lived together for a little over 2 years. This is our home (at least for now), and I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🏠 . . P.S: Closet Update: January 2019 is now live on my blog! Head on over to see what I bought and let go of last month! Link is in bio 👆🏻#pleblife
Giving secondhand items as gifts—yay or nay? . . I’m more than a month into my six-month long challenge of shopping only secondhand, and it has honestly turned out to be more fun and doable than I thought it’d be! This challenge has been even more fun now that Brandon has joined me! We’ve had quite a few thrifting dates in this new year! 👫 . . So with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we thought we’d challenge ourselves to shopping secondhand for our gift exchange. Head on over to the blog to see what we got each other (link in bio!) 👆🏻 #pleblife #sotelaeverydaywoman
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” 👀 . . These last few days have not been the easiest to practice gratitude. There was even a moment this morning that I laughed at myself for thinking that daily journaling three things that I’m grateful for would somehow magically change my life or change me to be less pessimistic or jaded about humanity. . . I’ve been getting a lot of messages in response to my daily gratitude journal snap on how inspiring it’s been for some of you, and I am SO happy for those of you who have decided to start a journal of your own. I do want to be transparent though: Some days are harder than others to just not write the obvious things of coffee, my bed, or being alive. There are some days, like yesterday, that I was angry at our education system; that I was exhausted from my job; that I was unmotivated to journal and ended up forgetting to do it before heading to bed. However, I am beginning to truly see that it is these days when practicing gratitude is the most necessary. I keep going back to a quote that my students and I quote a lot: “It is not happy people who are thankful. It is thankful people who are happy.” And I truly hope that after the next 342 days left of this Year of Gratitude, there will be a moment that I laugh at my pessimistic self for NOT believing in the magic of gratitude for changing my life and for changing the way I look at things. . . I snapped this photo after grabbing a wonderful lunch with @petraalexandra; and afterwards, Brandon and I took advantage of being by the ocean to visit it in the middle of winter. I really do have so much to be grateful for, and I really really really need to remember that. ✨ #pleblife
It’s been a pretty slow start to the new year over here. Ever since Christmas, social media just hasn’t been the same for me. I have felt very little motivation or desire to post or even to look at others’ posts. I’ve been spending less than 10 minutes daily on Instagram, which for this girl, who used to consume hours daily, is a pretty big shift. My phone used to not be far from my hands, but now I can leave my phone for hours and hardly notice it being away from my side. . . This break in posting and in consuming media has been absolutely wonderful. I’ve found motivation to start my 365 days of gratitude journaling, where I take the time to reflect and write three things I’m grateful for that day (I’m trying not to repeat things, and so far, it’s been going great!). I’ve found time to read again before bedtime. I’ve found even more contentment with my wardrobe as I’m not comparing it against those of others via scrolling through Instagram. . . During this time away, I’ve also been contemplating how to move forward with this little space of mine: Do I want to continue to post outfit photos? Do I even care about documenting my outfits anymore? How will I approach sponsored content this year? Is my blog more centered around minimalism or ethical fashion? What do I want my blog and my Instagram to document? How can Instagram and my blog spark joy within me again? . . That last question has been on my mind a lot these days. On the blog, you can read more how I took a very Marie Kondo approach in decluttering the way I’m going to blog and Instagram moving forward (link in bio 👆🏻). I am trying to spark the joy back into social media ✨. #pleblife
A huge goal I have in this new year is to shop more secondhand than new (and to just shop less in general). Even though I’ve slowed way down with shopping and have started shopping more ethically, I still find myself consuming more than necessary. I’m hoping that shopping secondhand will make me really work for my clothes and will really make me think about what I add to my wardrobe in the next year. That’s why I’ve challenged myself to only shop secondhand for the next six months! 😱 . . I picked up my beloved bucket bag about four years ago off of eBay when it was sold out everywhere, and I have worn it almost everyday since. 🖤 . .
