In my last Closet Update, I announced that I was going to change these closet updates a little and do them seasonally rather than monthly with the hope being that I start thinking more long term versus month-to-month with my shopping and decluttering habits. I have really enjoyed this slower pace of keeping data and not having to worry about sticking super rigidly to the one-in-one-out rule, but this might be partially due to the slower pace of Summer for me (aka wearing more yoga clothes than real clothes). I also found myself taking a backseat when it came to this blog and posting on Instagram, which always makes me slow down the urge to shop. I think for the most part, I did pretty well sticking to the rules of the Slow Fashion Season Challenge that ran from June 21 to September 21.

– WHAT I LEARNED –
This last Summer was definitely a season of slowing down. Having time away from Instagram and the blog gave me a lot of time to reflect and finally put my thoughts to paper and then to keyboard to blog. I really confronted the gnawing feeling that I was consuming way too much, and it really bothered me. Sure, I’ve slowed down since I started my minimalism journey but it wasn’t enough, and I want to slow down even more. Lately, this intense feeling against consumerism has grown within me. I get so much more satisfaction from not buying clothes. I feel so victorious when I’m able to buy something I want secondhand, especially one that’s still being sold in stores or online. I’m so surprised with these new feelings, but I’m fully embracing them.
I’m also slowly realizing that as much as my relationship with Instagram has changed, my relationship with clothes is also slowly changing, perhaps as a result of it. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of uniform dressing. The idea of not having to think so hard about what you wear has always been appealing to me, which has what drew me to minimalism in the first place. Ever since I’ve started to chase minimalism, it takes me less time to get ready or find something to wear, but eventually, I would love to find a uniform that is so quintessentially, all-encompassing of me that I can wear it practically everyday. I want to spend even less time and energy thinking about what to wear so I can focus on other things. I’ve been trying this thing where I just leave the house in the first thing that I try and it has been really challenging but also so easy. And so, I think I’m going to spend this next season really looking at the clothes I’m choosing to wear and to further refine and curate. My item count is currently at 63, but I think I can shrink it further down. 63 still feels like a lot and I don’t even have all my clothes out at once. I think once sweater weather stabilizes here in LA, I’ll have a better idea of what I want to further trim and get closer to my dream of uniform dressing.
Goodbye Summer! Hello Fall!
