Review: Everlane Soft Cotton Square Cardigan

As much as I’ve enjoyed embracing Summer clothes and curating a hot-weather wardrobe this year, I’m really itching for Fall to come (as I’m sure every other blogger is). For a girl who lives in LA, I have an unhealthy obsession with sweaters. Unfortunately for me, sweater weather comes late here in LA, and it also doesn’t last very long. It seems to arrive just after Thanksgiving and seems to be gone before Valentine’s Day. Even still, I’ve somehow collected more sweaters than t-shirts over the years.

The months leading up to our Fall are dangerous for me. As I watch the world turn into a beautiful spectrum of orange, yellow, and red on my Instagram feed, I’m filled with envy when I see girls in sweaters and boots while we’re still sweating it out as we eat our Thanskgiving feasts. This Fall/Winter, I’m going to try my hardest to resist temptation to add anymore sweaters and cardigans into my wardrobe. I’m also going to try my hardest to let some go as I don’t ever wear all of them as much I could if I were to live in a colder climate. If I’m ever going to have my goal of having an year-round wardrobe that consists of about 50ish items, then I’m definitely going to have to learn to let go of some knits.

That being said…I couldn’t resist picking up the Everlane Soft Cotton Square Cardigan a few weeks ago when I got a $20 credit. When I was considering buying it, I checked my Closet Inventory and was surprised to see that I didn’t own a black cardigan, which for this monchromatic lover is hard to believe. I remember last Fall that this was a gap that I did want to fill, and now I have!

QUALITY

As I’ve said in other Everlane reviews before, I’ve never had a problem with their quality. I think that’s why I keep coming back to them time and time again for my basics. This cardigan is made from a thick, soft, but not itchy or too heavy 100% cotton knit. I think the thickness of this knit is going to be perfect for an LA winter and for any place that has cranked their air conditioning a little too high. After owning the Everlane Soft Cotton Square Crew Sweater and loving it, I knew that I would love the cardigan version as well. I love the dropped shoulder design too because it makes me feel like I’m wearing a boyfriend’s cardigan.

COMFORT & FIT

Unlike with the sweater version though, I decided to size down from my normal size as I typically do with cardigans. It is still the perfect amount of oversized that I want, and I think if I had gone with my normal size, that it would be a little too long at the waist and at the sleeves (which to be honest, are too long for my 5’2″ frame). Currently, I love that it’s a little cropped and hits me perfectly at my hip bones. It pairs wonderfully with all my high-waisted pants and cropped tees and tanks. This sweater is incredible comfortable and cozy! The only thing that I wish it had were pockets as I find myself wishing I could burrow my hands into it being the awkward introvert that I am, but thankfully the sleeves are nice and long to play with when I don’t know what else to do!

VERSATILITY

Despite it still being 90-degrees here in LA, I have been wearing this non-stop: to work, to nip out to the grocery store, and lounging around the apartment. This has been my favorite way to wear it: with my Free Label Sunday Pants, my Everlane Cotton Double V-Neck Tank, and my Nisolo Isla Slide Sandals. I haven’t tried this cardigan with any different silhouettes quite yet, as I’m not quite sure it will pair well with dresses since I usually prefer longer cardigans with dresses. I am excited to play with different lengths and layering this Fall. I also do want to try this cardigan as a top buttoned up and tucked into pants when it does get cooler. To me the possibilities seem endless with cardigan and I’m so tempted to buy it in the other colors available, but I think for right now, I’m quite content with this black one that I have.

Final verdict? I LOVE THIS CARDIGAN! If I had to choose between the sweater version and this cardigan version, I’d pick the cardigan version. I highly recommend this cardigan. I think it’s one of my favorite Everlane pieces I own, and I own quite a bit from them!
