Initial Living with a Capsule Wardrobe

It’s been a full week since we started this capsule wardrobe experiment. In this past week, we’ve hung out with friends at coffee shops, lounged around at home, went to the gym, hung out at The Americana, and went to a concert. With such a wide range of activities, it was a great initial test to see how well our wardrobe worked for our casual lifestyle. And I have to say…we’ve been LOVING having a more intentional and smaller wardrobe.

After sitting with my wardrobe for a few days, I was able to edit it with pieces that I had stored away. I noticed that I wasn’t gravitating towards some pieces and so I put those back in storage and swapped them with pieces that I had missed. This allowed me to really evaluate what was truly missing from my wardrobe so that my shopping could be smarter and more intentional. I realized that I was missing a solid foundation of basic tees and this is where I knew I would begin.

Like any addict, returning to the real world was probably the hardest step. My first moments in stores were filled with uncertainty and fear that I would make the same mistakes as before. This time though, I had a mission: to find the perfect tee. For this reason, I stayed away from the sale sections (which typically is where I head straight for) because I knew that good basics were rarely on sale and would be a staple for any store. I tried on many t-shirts and was very critical about the way they fit and felt. I left my many stores empty-handed, and each time, my resolve grew stronger.

In this hunt for a perfect tee, I found a love for dresses. I bought this dress (along with a black t-shirt) on the condition that I would keep it IF it worked cohesively with the rest of my wardrobe and IF it could work for other seasons. I tried it with a few different shoes and jackets, and then, I tried making it work for Fall by pairing it with different sweaters. I was so happy that it all worked out and I would get to keep it. Since I bought it, I’ve already worn it twice! And for the first time in a long time, I feel like I bought something that I’d be excited to wear for years to come.

I’ve never been a dress kinda gal, but I think I’ve been converted. I noticed that the ones I did include in my wardrobe are one of the first things I grab. They’re just so easy! I’m excited to continue learning more about my style as this goes on.
